Mozambique is an attractive investment destination, being the second recipient country in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as, a member of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) UN, WTO, CPLP, the Commonwealth, the IMF, the World Bank, and the African Development Bank.

Mozambique is an important destination country for foreign direct investment (FDI) in Southern Africa due to its abundant natural resources and access to sea, which provides a significant advantage compared to its land linked neighbours. The Mozambican Government  strongly encourages foreign direct investment and has enormous investment opportunities in sectors such as: construction (roads, railway and general infrastructure), energy (natural gas, hydropower and bio-diesel), mining (tantalum, graphite and coal), fishing (including prawns, hake and lobster), aquaculture, tourism (hotels, sports and leisure), agriculture/horticulture (plantation forestry, cashews, sesame, tea, essential oils, fresh produce and vegetables, flowers, paprika, tobacco and tropical fruits), telecommunications, business consulting and transportation.

The discovery of large natural gas reserves in the Rovuma Basin has positioned Mozambique as an exciting investment opportunity in Africa, reaching an impressive economic growth performance over the past 15 years.

Additional investment opportunities exist in infrastructure projects, agriculture, transportation, hydroelectric power generation, education and health, which are currently often financed by international donors.

Maputo International Airport is located 7.6 km away from office. The journey time from Maputo International Airport is approximmately 20 minutes and costs around 500,00 MT (equivalent to USD 8,00). Taxis are generally metered and only accept cash.

The dynamics of social relations have evolved at a rapid rate in recent times.Along with environmental changes, epidemics and the evolution of technology, the responses to these challenges have led to new ways of looking at these realities and, as a result, it has led to new models and formats for labour relations.After several years of hesitation, progress and setbacks, as well as the social dynamics that filled the world, a new law was recently approved, Law 13/2023 of the 25th of August, the Labour Law.The following have been made subject to the written form: employment contracts on commission, work at home contracts, manual labour construction contract, temporary work, labour brokering employment contract, intermittent work contracts and teleworking.The probationary period regime has undergone changes, as has the establishment of legal consequences for the use of legally prohibited means of obtaining evid­ence.Moreover, paternity leave of seven days has been established in the event of the birth of a child and 60 days in the event of the death or incapacity of the parent.The system for hiring foreign workers for non-profit organisations was strengthened, as well as the system for multiple employers and multi-em­ploy­ment.The legal regime for intermittent work contracts and teleworking was introduced, and working hours were established on an alternating basis.The system for suspending employment contracts due to force majeure and unforeseeable circumstances has been established.A wide range of rights and duties of those involved in labour relations have been established, strengthened and clarified, such as the compensation system in cases of termination of the employment contract on the employer's initiative with prior notice, the establishment of a justifiable reason for absence in the event of the death of parents-in-law, sons-in-law and daugh­ters-in-law, as well as the suspension of the limitation period during maternity and paternity leave or illness that makes it impossible for the employee to attend work.This law comes into force on the 21st of February 2024, 180 days after the date of its publication.

15/06/2023CMS Africa will be present once again at Africa's largest renewables energy sector event - the Africa Energy Forum - which this year takes place in Nairobi and will unite governments, utilities and regulators with development finance institutions, commercial banks, power developers, technology providers, EPCs and professional services.Over the last 24 years, the Forum has earnt a reputation as the most meaningful gathering of decision-makers in the African renewable energy sector. After CMS' first participation last year in Brussels, we became aware that it is the kind of event we need to attend, and we committed to strengthening our investment in it. To this end, this year CMS Africa will have a stand at the conference venue, will host a cocktail party at one of the official hotels, to welcome our clients and will have a delegation of 9 partners at the event from the offices in South Africa, Angola, Mozambique, Kenya, Lisbon and London.
